It isn’t surprising that each piece of Bibi van der Velden jewellery feels like a wearable art. Sculpture was this New-York born Dutch designer’s first love. Having trained in this medium at The Florence Academy of Arts, the Gerrit Reitveld Academy in Amsterdam and The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, she finally turned her attention to jewellery in 2006. As well as being defined by its intricacies and a habit of mixing the traditional – 18kt fairtrade gold or diamonds – with the unusual – think 60,000-year-old mammoth tusk or scarab-beetle wings – Van der Velden’s jewellery has a signature playfulness. Mammoth-tusk and tsavorite alligators hang from the ear by “biting” it between their jaws, while jewel-encrusted elephants dangle by their trunk from 18kt rose-gold chains. It’s witty yet beautiful and always contains an element of surprise.
