It’s not every day a business can say it got its start because Jay-Z requested a bracelet to be designed just for him. But that is exactly what happened with Shamballa. Founded in 2005 by brother Mads and Mikkel Kornerup, Shamballa, named after the mythical kingdom also known as Shangri-La, takes the traditional Buddhist prayer bead gives it a luxury twist. Rather than using sandalwood or lotus plant seeds, these beads are decked out in diamonds, made from precious metals or engraved with the brand’s Star of Shamballa logo. The brand has expanded to include fine-jewellery pieces not made from the beads, but they remain the most iconic part of the collection, seen on the likes of Helena Christensen, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jay-Z, of course.
